LME zinc prices came under producer selling pressure from a high of
2846$/ton on July 17 and eased down to a low of 2718$/ton yesterday.
The recent weak trade brought the prices below the 9 and 20 day moving
averages around 2780$/ton, which is now acting as a resistance. MACD
indicator has entered the SELL region, which signals that the positive
possible short-term momentum, indicated by STOCH and RSI could be
capped at resistance.
China steel futures have been declining since yesterday on the back of
oversupply concerns. Mills had boosted supply to take advantage of a
huge spike in margins. That is why investors are now pricing the
oversupply situation, where they had priced in the short supply so
far, this year. Should the slide continue in steel, zinc may come
under further pressure.
LME zinc cancelled warrants declined by 50% since last week, meaning
that metal earmarked for delivery is dropping. This is also evident
in a rise in near term discounts, which means that the market is
pricing in adequate supply.
According to LME COTR data funds' total net zinc positions dropped to
82,469 lots on July 14 from 82,551 lots on July 07.
